As I have mentioned before, it is almost impossible to deduce the identities of the 2 Beasts just based on what is revealed in the Bible.
That being said, while we can’t know for sure who they are, we can be quite certain of who they are not… and they are certainly not who our dear friend, Robert (I just have to mention him, right?), thinks they are.
According to him…
a) The first beast is identified as Rome (7 heads = 7 early kings of Rome).
The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman (Babylon) sits. There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come.
Yes. I believe the 7 heads are 7 kings (the 7 mountains being their territories), but how did Robert conclude they are the “7 early kings of Rome”? No idea. But definitely not from reading the verses.
b) The 10 crowned horns (to attack) are 10 waves of persecution by 10 Roman emperors beginning at Nero and the mortal wound suffered by one of the horns was Nero’s rule, which “wounded” the Roman Empire.
The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.
The verse clearly says the 10 horns are 10 kings. So where did he get this idea they are “10 waves of persecution”? Beats me.
And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast.
And I failed to see how Nero’s reign (which caused a temporary decline in the Roman Empire) can be constituted as a “mortal wound” and how Rome’s subsequent recovery can make the whole world marvel. We see such ups and downs in history all the time and I doubt anyone (except him) thinks it is such a big deal.
Perhaps it did not occur to him that a wound could be just that… a wound.
c) The 666 Beast must be someone “associated with Solomon” because it is written in 2 Chronicles 9:13 that the King received 666 talents of gold yearly and had “6 steps to his throne plus 6 by 6 lions on each side” (2 Chronicles 9:17-19).
Sounds pretty convincing, doesn’t it? That is until you realize the Bible explicitly mentions that 666 is the number of the Beast’s name, not the amount of gold nor the measurements of a throne.
… and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
And most importantly, 666 is not the number of the second Beast.
666 is the number of the first Beast with 7 heads and 10 horns and “the beast” in the Book of Revelation always refers to him. The second Beast is called the False Prophet and is only described as a beast in the first verse of Revelation 13. He has nothing to do with the number 666.
And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.
As we can see, the Beast and the False Prophet are two distinct individuals and they are captured together after their war against Christ. This proves that they co-exist and co-rule during the period of Tribulation (with the former as the big boss and the latter as his lieutenant).
Once again, Robert has proven that while he loves to pontificate about “reading the plain meaning of the (Bible) text”, he does not practice what he preach, constantly forcing his own ideas into the text with no justification or basis.
*A special thanks to my friend, Joel, who has provided me with plenty of information on this subject.*
