Walking Through the Valley

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…
(Psalm 23:4)

Even in the most comforting psalm of the Bible, there is a mention of a dark place: The Valley of the Shadow of Death.

With an ominous name like this, it is obviously not a place we will want to be near, let alone be in.

But God did not say we will avoid it. He did not say we can skirt around it. He said we walk through it… through this valley of darkness, this valley of dangers, this valley of dread and fear…

But notice something?

God did not say we will stay in it. He did not say we need to hang around for a while before getting out. He said we will walk through it… meaning we will enter from one side and walk straight out from the other side!

It might take us some time to reach the exit and it might be a bit hard to bear along the way, but out from it we will surely be!

And did you notice something else?

It is not called the valley of death, but the valley of the shadow of death and a shadow is not the substance, meaning it is not real! It might look big, scary and menacing but it has no power over us!

And the Bible says, we really have nothing to fear… because our Lord is with us.

I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
(Psalm 23:4)

You might be only halfway through your own personal valley at the moment but take heart, our Good Shepherd is with us every step of the way…

Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
(Isaiah 41:10)
