Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
Only those who are secured in their identity can bring themselves down… and Jesus knew exactly who He is.
He knows He is the Lord of lords, the King of kings. He knows He is the Son of God. He knows He is the Beloved of His Father. And He knows nothing will change His identity.
But many of us are not so sure of who we are.
We feel a need to mask our insecurities by putting up a front. We feel a need to impress others with our material possessions, academic credentials or big job titles. We feel a need to fabricate an imaginary self because we did not like our true self…
But now, knowing our identity in Christ, don’t you think we should start dropping those pretensions?
Our true security is in Him.
