I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the gods.
I will bow down toward Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your loving-kindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.
(Psalm 138:2-3 NASB)
Juliet Capulet (of Romeo and Juliet ) famously said, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet;…”, but of course, the poor girl didn’t know better.
Indeed, what is in a name? Well, apparently everything…
“…as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name..” (John 1:12)
“… If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:14)
“… that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth…” (Phil 2:10)
Of course, given that David lived before Jesus’ time, he would know God by His other revealed name to the Jewish people:
And by this name, He has revealed Himself to be (just to list a few..)
- Yahweh Jireh:“The Lord will provide.” (Genesis 22:14)
- Yahweh Shalom:“The Lord is Peace.” (Judges 6:24)
- YahwehRo’i: “The Lord my Shepherd.”(Psalm. 23:1)
- Yahweh Elohim Israel:“The Lord, the God of Israel.” (Judges. 5:3.; Isaiah. 17:6)
By His name, we have everything…
