Fair and Square

So should our Govt provide the same benefits (ie upgrading) to all constituency, including the opposition ones? After all, the people living in those areas “pay their taxes too”, as many of them would say.

But that begs another question: do we even know the primary purpose of paying taxes in the first place? Kindly read the below (the ones in bold are those applicable to our country):

“Money provided by taxation has been used by states and their functional equivalents throughout history to carry out many functions. Some of these include expenditures on war, the enforcement of law and public order, protection of property, economic infrastructure (roads, legal tender, enforcement of contracts, etc.), public works, social engineering, and the operation of government itself. Governments also use taxes to fund welfare and public services. These services can include education systems, health care systems, pensions for the elderly, unemployment benefits, and public transportation. ”

Do we feel safe walking on streets at night? Do we have an efficient transport system that brings us from point A to B? Do we have a fair legal system where our legal rights are protected? Are the street lights working properly and potholes on the road filled so there is less traffic accidents? Are medical expenses heavily subsidized for the lower income group? Do we have a proper education system that will enable our future generation to earn a decent living?

If your answers are positive, then you would already know the reason you pay taxes for. Since when has paying your taxes entitled you to upgrading?

(Maybe some of you don’t really think much of the things I listed above, you can always go to a neighbouring country and experience the difference.)

In any case, if you really insist on fairness, maybe you can try this:

“Communism is a sociopolitical movement that aims for a classless and stateless society structured upon common ownership of the means of production, free access to articles of consumption, and the end of wage labour and private property in the means of production and real estate.”

You don’t own your house because everyone else is a co-owner too. You earn the same money as the guy who sweeps your housing estate even though you spent years of education  as a doctor. You don’t get to enjoy the finer things in life because there are no “finer” things… only the “same” things.

Is it fairer this way??
