For the Law-yers, Theologians…

Today, I shall attempt to be a bit theological…

Whenever I talked to fellow Christians about grace, invariably someone will asked in an offended tone, “What about sin? What about the law?” as if I had just uttered some blasphemous statements.

Indeed, what about sin, what about the law?

Now, if we look carefully, there is a presupposition built into this question. It assumed that we, the “grace-believers”, are ignoring the issue of sin, disregarding the holy law of God and practising lawlessness (or antinomianism, for those who love jargons)…. exactly what Paul was accused of during his time.

So what did good O’ Paul had to say about it? (Rom 7:7-10)

7What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. …. 8But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. 9Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

Like what he wrote, we DID NOT deny the law. On the contrary, we recognised it is as holy, righteous and good. We are for it for the purpose it was for and the context in which it is applicable. BUT (a very big one) we also realized that the law was never meant to save anyone from sin, and ironically, sin took advantage of the law, planted itself in our consciousness and produced death in all of us.  The very thing that many people believed is the solution to the problem turned out to be a catalyst for it!!

So how? (Rom 8: 1-3)

Therefore, there is NOW no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.

The law was powerless to make us free from sin and death. Powerless!! And people thought it is such a great idea to preach the law! Why are people still focusing on using the law instead of the SON!? Are we confusing what is the problem and the solution?

Lastly, to show the difference between those under the grace of Jesus and those under the law (which someone could actually tell me it was a “gracious gift”)

Matt 11: 29-30 (Jesus’ words)

Take My yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Acts 15:10-11 (Peter rebuking those Jews who tried to impose law on their disciples.)

10Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? 11No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.

Which yoke are you putting on people?

Oxens under yoke.
